First learners start on the new City and Guilds Social Services Practitioner qualification

The Social Services Practitioner (SSP) consortium is a group of 14 local authorities and 3 learning providers in South Wales who have joined forces to deliver the new level 4 City and Guilds SSP qualification.

The qualification, which is fully funded under the apprenticeship programme, aims to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills needed in their social work assistance role, providing advice, and completing various aspects of care and support planning.

The first cohort of 45 learners have been recruited, and will commence their learning in February. It is expected to take 18 months to 2 years to complete.

The qualification has been approved by Social Care Wales as equivalent to the first year of the degree in Social Work, thus providing an additional pathway into Social Work for those who wish to progress.
